An adaptive reuse headquarters that reflects mission and community impact.

Founded in 1947, the Richard King Mellon Foundation has awarded more than 8,000 grants totaling over $3 billion in support of conservation, economic development, health and well-being, and social impact. Its new headquarters reimagines the historic Auction House in Pittsburgh’s Strip District as a workplace that welcomes grantees while reinforcing the foundation’s purpose.

Karpinski Engineering provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, technology, fire protection, and sustainability services for the renovation, which achieved LEED Gold Certification. The open plan is organized around two defining elements: the “Green Box,” housing core building systems, and the translucent “Glowy Box,” a flexible convening space for meetings and events. A custom mosaic representing nearly 2,000 supported organizations anchors this central gathering area.

High-performance systems, LED lighting, enhanced insulation, and thoughtfully selected materials support long-term efficiency. Operable windows, abundant daylight, acoustic treatments, and wellness amenities contribute to employee comfort. The result is a flexible, efficient headquarters that honors the foundation’s legacy while strengthening its connection to the community.
