Saving energy while staying in the driver’s seat
Rocky River City Schools completed a district-wide energy project and facility upgrades to improve building performance. Starting with Karpinski’s energy audits and facility assessments, the school district got a snapshot of the MEP needs of all 5 of their buildings, totaling approximately 553,000 SF. The recommendations addressed both energy conservation measures (with cost and payback information) and facility improvement measures.
While the district originally planned to complete a performance contract (under Ohio’s HB 264), they found an alternate financing model that let them combine energy savings projects with additional infrastructure improvements. The Karpinski team was instrumental in developing a bundled solution, projected to save approximately $128,000 per year, that balanced energy improvements with building needs.
As a result, the district was able to complete both energy projects (including lighting replacements, lighting retrofits, chilled water plant improvements, and controls optimization) and infrastructure projects (including new HVAC systems for select areas, new boilers for one school, and new chillers for another school). And by using a design-build approach, the district was able to select their preferred contractors, products, and manufacturers. At $2.47 million (construction), the project finished under budget.
