First Phase, Bold Future: The Research-Driven Launch of the Innovation District
As the first phase of the Cleveland Innovation District, the renovated research labs at Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner Research Institute set the tone for a new era of scientific discovery. The 45,000-SF expansion includes open wet labs, specialized support spaces, and a new Biosafety Level 3 lab for advanced pathogen research. It’s home to leading-edge programs focused on computational life sciences, immunotherapy, and therapeutic discovery.
Karpinski Engineering provided MEPT and fire protection design for the renovation, with a strong focus on ventilation, airflow control, and energy conservation. The team designed 100% outside air systems, a manifolded exhaust system, and integrated heat recovery to support high-performance lab environments. The result is a flexible, high-functioning research space built to adapt, connect, and inspire.
