Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine Receives WELL Silver Certification

Mar 07, 2024

The new state-of-the-art medical education building is among the first in the nation to receive this certification from the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI). Ohio University students engage in active learning in spaces including simulation labs, an anatomy lab, and an Osteopathic Medicine lab. The building also includes classrooms, a library, study areas, and a 3-story atrium.

The WELL Building Standard was founded to explore the connection between built environments and the health and wellness of their occupants. This standard is a performance-based system for measuring, certifying, and monitoring features of the built environment through WELL’s 10 concepts: air, water, nourishment, light, movement, thermal comfort, sound, materials, mind and community.

The A/E team worked closely with OU’s project team in implementing WELL standards including:

  • Healthy food choices at the in-house café
  • A fully equipped fitness facility
  • Mindfulness and lactation rooms
  • Quiet study spaces
  • Sky Lights
  • Filtered water at every faucet in the facility
  • Prominent staircases
  • 1/8-mile track
