Engineering Expertise, Strategic Vision

As Principal and Director of Building Performance & Sustainability, Joe Hofstetter connects innovation with strategy to strengthen client relationships across markets.

“What’s always been great about building performance and sustainability is that it reaches across all of our markets,” Joe says. “It’s given me a diverse understanding of what our clients need and created opportunities to bring new ideas to project teams.”

Joe sees thermal electrification and building commissioning as key trends shaping the next five years. “Thermal electrification isn’t one-size-fits-all. Our energy grids differ across regions, so we work closely with each client to find the right solution. Commissioning is also growing, with more clients relying on us to guide them through new code requirements and the benefits these services bring.”

For Joe, building strong client relationships isn’t just about technical solutions; it’s about connecting the right expertise to the right opportunities. “Our best asset is our people and the services they provide. Leadership is about championing that and shaping a brand that reflects it,” he says. This reflects his belief that leadership is as much about fostering talent and collaboration internally as it is about delivering results externally.

“Growth comes from understanding your strengths and how they fit into the bigger picture,” Joe says. “When you focus on applying your skills to make a positive impact, the rest tends to fall into place, whether you’re developing as a technical expert, a leader, or both.”

Ryan Smith, RCDD

Principal, Director of Technology

Powering Teams, Driving Technology

When Ryan Smith joined Karpinski, he discovered a new path in Technology, an unexpected opportunity that shaped both his career and leadership style.

Ryan leads with a philosophy that learning comes through hands-on experience and problem-solving. “I encourage the team to experiment and learn from their mistakes within a safe and supported environment,” he explains. He adjusts his approach to each team member, being hands-on or hands-off depending on what helps them thrive.

As Principal and Director of Technology, Ryan is deeply involved in projects while collaborating across all departments. “I can help the firm by understanding the capabilities of each production group and then coaching them,” he shares.

Mentoring teams and supporting professional growth is central to Ryan’s role. “The best part of what I do is helping the team figure things out and watching them grow technically and professionally,” he says.

Ryan credits much of his own growth to early mentors. “Tom Gilliland would always say, ‘Let me know when/if you need me.’ That guidance gave me space to make mistakes, learn, and grow into the leader I am today,”

Empowering the Next Generation of Engineers

Every project presents new challenges, and to Principal Matt Priebe, that means new opportunities to learn and collaborate. “It lets you know there is always something new to learn and always room to grow,” he said. Matt focuses on collaboration and growth when mentoring and leading his team.

That collaborative spirit extends into how Matt leads and develops younger engineers. “We empower younger engineers to take initiative and build confidence, that’s how growth happens,” he shared. He supports younger engineers as they take on new responsibilities, explore ideas, and grow their skills, providing guidance every step of the way.

At the same time, Matt believes it’s essential to remain a strong technical expert. “It requires deliberate prioritization and delegation while maintaining a strong technical foundation,” he explained. That balance gives clients confidence while setting an example for the next generation.

Looking to the future, Matt is energized by emerging technologies like AI and microgrids. He sees the potential for AI to increase efficiency and quality, and for microgrids to strengthen energy resiliency and help manage rising utility costs.

For engineers who aspire to leadership, Matt’s advice is clear, step up. “There is no substitute for experience,” he emphasized. Volunteering for new challenges not only shows initiative but also demonstrates that you’re already leading.
