LEED Silver Certification for Center for Innovation in Medical Professions
Oct 17, 2017
In the Center for Innovation in Medical Professions (CIMP), Cleveland State University (CSU) has combined new experiences in healthcare education with high-tech systems and beautiful surroundings. CIMP serves students in medicine, nursing, and health professions. They will learn in spaces such as simulation labs and interactive video distance learning classrooms. CIMP is also home to CSU’s Health and Wellness Center and the Speech and Hearing Clinic.
KE services: MET, Lighting, & Security Design
LEED version: LEED BD+C: New Construction v3 - LEED 2009
Building size: 106,000 SF
Project cost: $47.7 million
Energy savings: Projected 31.7% energy consumption savings & 22.7% energy cost savings
Why it works: CIMP incorporates a range of sustainable design elements, from site redevelopment to water use reduction. The HVAC system is design for energy savings. It incorporates air-side energy recovery on the air handlers for year-round energy savings, for example, and perimeter fin-tube radiation allows CSU to shut down the AHUs during unoccupied hours. In the colder months, waste steam condensate preheats the snow-melt system. The lighting is a mix of LED and fluorescent.

About LEED
LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) is a program of the U.S. Green Building Council that promotes sustainable building design. Through the LEED program, buildings are evaluated on measures such as energy-efficient building systems, water efficiency, sustainable site strategies, and sustainable building materials. A building can be awarded one of four certification levels: Certified, Silver, Gold, or Platinum (the highest).
Karpinski Engineering’s contributions to a building’s LEED certification typically impact its energy and water use – through efficient electrical, lighting, HVAC, and plumbing design.
