Cogence Drive Award for Hospital Infrastructure Upgrades Project

Oct 25, 2022

The Cleveland Clinic H Building Infrastructure Upgrades project has won the 2022 Cogence Drive Award, Mid-Size Project category. The Drive Awards honor the best in project collaboration, highlighting “the critical role and immense value that collaboration and innovation bring to building projects.”

Delivered using Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), the project entailed major electrical and mechanical infrastructure upgrades to the 500,000-SF H Building. H Building is an active patient care facility, with functions that impact the entire campus. As a legacy building, it needed system upgrades to support safe and steady functionality. The team created a main normal medium voltage system and replaced the main emergency electrical system. They also refurbished the building’s four main air handling unit (totaling over 400,000 CFM). All of this happened while the facility remained online. The system upgrades improve patient safety and increase reliability, and they are easier to maintain.

Karpinski Engineering was the MEP Engineer of Record and a signer of the Tri-Party IPD Agreement for the project. IPD is a highly collaborative method for designing and building projects. It is structured to increase effective teamwork and reduce project risks.

IPD allowed for a level of collaboration that matched the project’s level of complexity. The design and construction teams were on board from the beginning, working together to develop the design and plan construction. Through their collaboration, the team mitigated risks, provided accurate estimates, and saved money. Even more remarkably, most construction work successfully took place during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Project team members included:

  • Whiting Turner (Construction Manager & signer of Tri-Party IPD Agreement)
  • Lake Erie Electric (Electrical Contractor)
  • Relmec (Mechanical Contractor)
  • Perspectus (Architecture)
  • Barber & Hoffman (Structural Engineer)
  • Eaton (Equipment Manufacturer)
