Convention Center Is Complete

The $465-million Cleveland Convention Center was recently completed, a journey KE began in July 2009 with a formal MEP assessment of Cleveland's Public Auditorium and the existing Convention Center. Although the Public Auditorium is not part of the new facility, KE completed the design of a few offshoot projects, including:
  • Separation of the Public Auditorium's MEP services from the existing Convention Center
  • Demolition of the west addition of the Public Auditorium, required to make way for the new Convention Center
  • Connections between the two facilities to take advantage of amenities available in the Public Auditorium when hosting large events
The ribbon-cutting ceremony and public tours for the Convention Center took place on June 14 and 15. With approximately 650,000 SF, the Convention Center includes 230,000 SF of exhibition space, more than 30 meeting rooms, pre-function spaces, and a 32,000-SF grand ballroom that accommodates 4,600 people. Receiving rave reviews, the National Senior Summer Games were the convention Center's first event, and the Global Center for Health Innovation is scheduled to open in October. KE is currently designing many showroom spaces to meet this milestone. The Convention Center was completed under budget and three months ahead of schedule. This is significant, as the project surplus will be contributed to $350 million in additional development the city and county are planning. Some of the proposed projects include a new Convention Center hotel, a walkway connecting the malls to the lakefront, a parking garage, additional development on the mall, and an upgrade to Public Square.

"These projects will really connect some of Cleveland's best assets together," said Brian David, KE's Director of Engineering and project manager for this project.

The Convention Center is KE's fourth large-scale project to be completed this spring/summer, following the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Corporation's Global Headquarters, Eaton Corporation's Eaton Center, and Fairview Hospital's Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit.
