Advanced Training Center at Global Borders College receives LEED® Gold Certification
Karpinski Engineering designed the
mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, security and technology systems for the LEED® Gold-Certified Advanced Training Center at Global Borders College in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The $24-million, two-story, 61,000-square-foot facility houses administrative and training spaces, conference rooms, offices and a two-story gathering space, and the Center provides advanced law enforcement training of its officers, agents and more than 600 new supervisors added annually.
Completed as phase three of a five-phased new campus, The Global Borders College and Advanced Training Center received LEED® Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council, implementing sustainable design elements which include: an energy reduction of 19.4%; thermal comfort and verification; 86% water-use reduction due to low-flow fixtures and a grey water system; lighting and thermal system controls; a geothermal ground-loop heat-exchanger system; a central heat pump system which supplies the building with heating and cooling water; and ventilation air, which is distributed through a raised-floor air distribution system.
